The best example I have seen so far of the kind of diversity that can only exist in a crossroad of cultures is in the district of Dardok, about one hour northeast of Andijon City. Population 19,711 – primarily made up of 59% Uzbek and 39% Kyrgyz, but includes an additional mix of Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Urgur, Armenian, Kazak, Moldovian, Karakalpak…among others. How these people got here is a fascinating history of the centuries. More recent additions, however, are a result of army men bringing wives home from military service...so I’m told.
The head of Dardok district joked that he hopes to add a Thai-American to his statistics. “Huda holassa,” I said. “God willing.”
